Vanilla rooting is very simple. Here are two methods for you to choose:
The potting method
- You should use a transparent plastic pot. It’s easier to check the media and the new roots.
- You can use many kind of potting media. Recently I use grow cubes. (But a mixture of 80% general potting soil + 20% perlite / 100% potting soil / 100% perlite / 100% coco chips / 100% small pine bark are all tested and work, too.)
- Place the vine in the potting mix. Double check that the bottom end of the vine goes into the pot. Bury the vine so that at least the first node (the leaf starting point on the vine) is be under the surface of the potting media. (No need to remove the buried leaf.)
- Place the pot at a warm place with half shade. No direct sunlight! Artificial lights are okay.
- Keep media damp but not soggy.
Roots will start growing in a few days. New growth will be start in a few weeks.
Be patient if the visible parts of the plant look healthy. Sometimes the new growth stars from the buried node, and need more time to get to the surface.
The quick and lazy Vanilla rooting method
- Place the vine on a moist spaghnum moss bed.
- Keep the moss moist, but not too wet at all times.
- Wait a few weeks.
New roots will start to grow into the moss in a few days or weeks, depending on the Vanilla species.
The best growing location is warm and very humid.
Wait a few weeks.
